April 18, 2008 update

So, we asked Dad what his opinion was of all the delays and...he just stared at us like we were dumb. We almost expected to hear him sigh heavily and say, "You kids are such pains."
A sample of the nasty icky gooey stuff inside his ear was taken to be checked for infections. There is some infection in the ear, but they are still not sure it is the source of the fever. Now they have found bacteria growing in his blood cultures, so they are certain the surgery would have spread the infection. The surgery entails inserting hardware in the vertebrate to stablilize the spine, and release pressure on the spinal cord. It will take place next week after the fever subsides. Dad takes breaths on his own, but the ventalator helps bring in adequate oxygen. Dad's response time is a little on the slow side, at least two weeks behind...or so.

Dad,

Hey, what is up with you just laying around? You know if any of us kids were doing this you would be like get off your lazy butt, and do something. So I am telling you that I love you and to get off your lazy butt and do something.

To my family- Thank you so much for all the updates and love. Yeah your might not be showing the love all the time, but hey, we are a family so we do what we can, right? Any ways don't get to weighed down with the pressure of having to look after dads every need. You know he does have two legs, he should use them. ANy ways I got to go. If you get tired of me commenting, to bad. Love you all, that includes you dad.

My thoughts are with Stephen and all his family and loved ones at this difficult time. Most of you don't know me, but Stephen and I were playmates as children in Ukiah and afterwards that special summer in Rowland in 1952. We didn't see much of each other afterwards, except once in a while during the period the Verlon and Edith family lived in Logan. I believe the last time I saw Stephen was at the Dietrich Fourth of July celebration in 2005, when I stayed with Wanless. At this time it's impressive to see how the family is rallying around. My heartfelt best wishes to you all, E. Michael Southwick, Arlington, Virginia

Hey all,

Well, you can tell by looking at the comments under your April 11 post-----that I have never used a blog before. :-) The well wishes were meant for yesterday. We tried again and it must be somewhere in cyberspace. Maybe this time we'll get it right.

Sorry the surgery was delayed, but it sounds like it was for the best.

Our hearts, thoughts, and prayers were still with you yesterday, as they are every day.

Thank you for keeping us posted.

To the Southwick family.
My name is Chris, and I was one of the EMT's on scene at your father's accident. My thoughts and prayers are with you all in your time of need. I was very glad to hear that he made it through the first 24 hours because that can be the most critical time in a recovery process. If you need anything, please do not hesitate to ask. I can be reached by e mail at blakleyc672@yahoo.com or by contacting the Lincoln County ambulance office.
