April 24, 2008 update

What a sight! The nurses had dad upside down like a newborn baby, smacking his backside to get the junk out of his lungs. Okay, not exactly smacking his backside...but they have had his head lower than his feet, vibrating his back in an attempt to shake the gunk loose from his lungs. They've been pretty busy this morning. They gave him 2 units of blood, put in a new central line and tubing (for his medications and yummy liquid food!). They had him taking his own breaths for a few hours, with the ventilator kicking in to help. But he's still exhausted from surgery and so they have the ventilator breathing for him again. Later this afternoon, they are going to insert a humongous, deadly looking needle into his left side to remove any excess fluids that have been building up around his lungs. (Good thing he's still out like a light or he'd probably faint at the sight.) After Tuesday's surgery, they had to put him back on blood pressure meds to stabalize his blood pressure. However, this morning, they have taken him off and are hoping he can maintain a stable pressure on his own. They hope to take the ventilator tubes out of his throat and put in a trach tube in on Monday. So, he's been through quite a bit this morning and he'll probably sleep for the rest of the day (or longer). :)

A big thanks also to the doctors and nurses here who have taken such good care of dad. They have been wonderful and we sure appreciate them and their hard work and skill.

Pray for an infection free week!

It is so great to hear how things are going! I hadn't seen an update so was starting to fret.

I'm sure your Dad is keeping everyone on their toes, and is probably enjoying keeping everyone in a state of suspense. :-)

Is everyone holding together OK?

Not sure what your weather is like, but Steve, you better get up to speed soon, or your going to miss seeing everything blooming and coming to life!!!

To all Southwicks, (and we know there are a lot of you)- Don't think for one moment that Tom and I and our families have not had our prayers, hearts, concern and love go out to ALL of you, especially you Steve. I have known you all,- remember, those wonderful summers that I made you get up early, and work, (sometimes play)? Also don't think that your Dad was not checking on you, and the love he has for each and every one. He has been a great friend to me, as all of you have been over the last 34 years,(even though each of you might have driven me crazy in the kitchen).
I pray the Lord will continue to give all of you His strength through this difficult time. Bless you Cherri, and many hugs and kisses to you all. If there is anything any of you need, we live in Shoshone now, but the number is the same, let us know. Sincerely, Char & Tom, and family

Thanks for the updates!! I would like to take this opportunity to ask that Wendy post a pix of her not-so- new-but-still-new-to-a-lot-of-us hubby as a lot of us who don't live close have not had the chance to see or meet him yet.

We are praying for Uncle Steve!!

Because of the nature of our business, we trawl the interweb looking at related stories.

Every now and then, one touches our hearts, such as yours.

Our best wishes to your Dad.

Thank you so much for the update. I check this blog several times each day and must admit to some worry on my part not to hear how things were going for Uncle Steve on his first post-op day. You never know how that first day will go.

Oh, how I wish I could be there to ask U. Steve how he is doing and have him reply "Well, about usual for me.... fair to mostly wrotten!" That response never grew old. =)

Please know that ALL of you are in our prayers. We know that Heavenly Father has a wise purpose in all things. It may just be difficult to see what that is at this moment in time.

We love you immensely and will be here for you in whatever you need. I just wish we could be in Dietrich this weekend with you all! May it be a great success.

Hope to see you soon. I love you Uncle Steve!

Love,
Becky, Jeff, Ashley, Cordell, Megan, Brooke and Jayden Anderson

We are so happy that Steve is on the road to healing. I miss his singing voice in church. See you all on the 26th, I cant believe it has been 20 years since I saw you.

Hello, Southwick family! Most of you don't know me, but your son Scott taught me my new member lessons during his mission. I hope that your Dad has a quick and full recovery and I know that your tremendous faith has gotten him this far and your love can only get him further. I pray for him daily and will think of him when I go to the temple tomorrow.
My love and best wishes to all.

We are so glad that the surgery went well. Got a little concerned with no updates for a couple of days. So we put in a call to Mark & Vicki to check on things, but before they got the message, you had put the update on. It eased our minds. Thank you.

We hope everyone is holding up and taking care of themselves. We are looking forward to the breakfast and auction tomorrow and hope to see some of you, all of you, whoever can make it. If not, we will be with you in spirit.

Love,
John & Nancy
